Why I’ve switched to using Flock (and maybe you should too)
Posted June 23rd, 2009 by cgillenThere are many web browsers out there all vying for your attention. The most popular ones have either carved out their niches by providing unique features (like Opera), becoming the de facto standard forĀ geeks (like Firefox) or by inertia (hello Internet Explorer). All of them are free and all are polished and popular products.
So any browser competing in this market can expect stiff competition and will have to do something extraordinary to stand out from this distinguished crowd.
Enter Flock, designed using the same core as Firefox it is meant to be the socialĀ networking browser. It is made to tightly integrate with most, if not all, of the popular social networking services and sites and it achieves that goal with ease.

As you can see in the image Flock main feature is a bar that runs down the left side of the screen. This bar aggregates all the news and status feeds from social networking sites. This allows you to quickly have access to everything that is happening on your social websites while continuing to browse. In addition to the sidebar Flock also provides access to Facebook chat at all times in the bottom right hand corner.
This is a surprisingly useful system and for people like me who are are constantly moving from traditional websites to RSS feeds to Twitter, Facebook and other social media I have found my browsing has become simpler and more efficient. In the world of web browsing there is no higher praise.
Stability and security wise it is Firefox underneath and is solid and definitely ready for heavy daily usage while being more secure than the other leading browser. As an added bonus virtually all of the extensions made for Firefox are supported and can be installed with no addition hassle. In fact the simplest way to think of Flock is as Firefox on steroids (the good ones, not the testicle shrinking kind).
Now to be clear, this is not the web browser for everyone, but if you’re Twitter/Facebook and a Firefox user this is the best way I’ve found to use those services and browse at the same time.
P.S. This post was created entirely in Flock using the built in blogging software.
