Very often this is caused by the computer forgetting that it’s a burner. This can be reenabled by deleting the Windows driver and allowing the computer to reinstall the DVD burner driver.
1) Right click on My Computer
2) go to Properties -> Hardware tab
3) Click on Device Manager
4) Expand (by clicking the +) the DVD/CD Rom [...]

Possible causes:
1) Viruses can cause the background to disappear so check for viruses

The first question is does your laptop have XP drivers available. If it doesn’t then the answer is to keep the Vista.
By contacting the manufacturer or their website you can determine if they have produced drivers for your laptop.
